There is a product called Jif-Set used by flooring people to help smooth out floors. it is self leveling. You can probably get some good advice by going to a good tile or carpet store (not Home Depot).
yes you will need to use that its a thin concrete mixture and you pour it on and it will leave you will a super smooth professonial finish
