What I've seen all too often is that the slower car moves over to let the faster car by, decides to "tuck in" right behind the faster car to follow their line, and subsequently T-bones the faster car at the next turn. This necessitates the faster car to go through it all again in another lap or so, once the distance lost due to the T-bone is made up.
