Haven't heard anything about the UE shocks myself. I use the Traxxas Big-Bore Shocks with TiNi Shafts and RC Raven dual-rate springs. Works great.

The Tekno carriers are very nice, I have no fear of them failing. And no you
do not need 8mm stub axles to use them with Traxxas cvds. I run Traxxas cvds, you just need 4 6x16x5 bearings for the outer bearing in each carrier, done.
As for the 17mm adapters, if you are using Traxxas cvds, the ones from Tekno are unnecessary, use the ones you have, I am using Traxxas ones myself.
And for shocks, the UE supershocks are slightly modified Ofna 1/8 shocks, modified to work on a Maxx perfectly. So if you can get those, you'd be set.
