Pimpin is correct. The ball diff allows each wheel to turn at different rates. With a gear diff or ball diff...spinning the wheels forward wouldn't tell you a thing about the diff, it would only tell you the drivetrain isn't bound up.

It is also a great vid because you don't have to make easy laps on the track to break the diff in. It works awesome. I do it on my 2 and 4 buggy as well.
