If all you have are stock shims I would put one on one side and two on the other (take out one of your current shims), reassemble and see if its still knotchy. You want it as tight as possible to avoid the mystery clicking some guys have come across. I would try to get one thicker shim on each side asap though so you don't unevenly wear the outdrive bushings.
