Best helper I have found that was free was to take a set of needle nose pliers and put a rubber band around the end. That will help hold anything nice and still. And for what you are soldering, pretty much doing the battery plug side is where you want that. not much really. Tin both sides with solder, and your pretty set. Tinning is half the battle.
