I use them to take the slop out of the steering.

Usually there is some slop due to the ball cups not fitting the ball ends perfectly.

I know some people that use o-rings, but I've always liked using small rubber bands instead. Every time I tried using the o-rings it seemed like it bound up the ball cups.
