Can brushless motors be mixed with different esc's?

There is one sensored exception if I remember correctly. The first Novak Havok ESC I think it is requires a heat sensor signal from the motor to be available, thus only worked with Novak motors, if others very few. Believe Novak quit doing that in later and and current Havok versions (Pro, 3S, SC, etc??).
