Default Sensor cable protection

Quick question: In many of the photos of the wiring, the motor sensor cable is protected in a loosely fitting black tubing. Is that just heat shrink tubing or something else that will not be affected by the heat of motor? What ever the tubing is, what size works best? Is the purpose of the black tubing to protect the sensor cable from a hot motor or from rubbing?

Thanks,

Henry
