As an engineer myself, I have a firm belief in K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid. Where i work it is better to make things easy so that I am not the only one that knows how to fix it. that way i don't get called in everytime it breaks since the tech's have a good chance of being able to fix the problem.
