Alum. Hex up front normally have a locking screw in them to help hold the hex on the axle. I use the AE plastic ones and I have a small hole drilled in them and a set screw to hold them on the axle. Not had a problem at all with them. I run the alum Jconcepts rear. I found the stock AE plastics ones will wear out fast and cause slop between the axle nut and the rim.
As I posted above I did the same with my AE plastic hexes front and rear. So far so good. But now that you mentioned the possible rear issue I will pay attention. Thanks.
