I'm building mine at the mo, the width of the shaft is 7.99mm. So a small clearance to fit an 8mm ID bearing. I measured the bearing as well at 7.99mm but this was only with a verneir calliper which you cannot considered to be accurate enough for this type of measurement. The bearing ID must be slightly bigger as it fits nicely over the pinion.
