I had the same problem. I put in 1 shim did it once in a while. Put in 2 shims. So far still good after 6 batteries.

Cut the legs off the chip with a pair of dykes....

Cut the legs off the chip with a pair of dykes. (cut near the chip so you have enough to grab it with needle nose when you remove the legs)
Then Desolder each leg & pull out with pliers when hot....
