plugging them in backwards can create high current draw and high heat. Makes the wires, plugs and batteries hot. But, you usually get smoke too.

I don't have any scientific testing. I use pilot ceramic bearing oil which is pretty light. For larger quantities, I'd look at marvel air tool oil. I've heard good things about the Trinity oil.
