Not surprised Tekn is out of stock on those, 17.5 has to be the most popular class out there. Don't be afraid to look at other Mfg's too, I like to run Tekin RS and Hobbywing XR10 esc's....

You would want to run a steel, hardened pinion as well. This steel setup is what all 1/8th scale off-road trucks and buggies run. But ultimately yes, the pinion being smaller will wear out first.
