Sorry, looks like that is correct. The Axion 2 is designed as a receiver for racing applications and can only be ran in HHR mode. You will need the Axion 4 or Proton 4e to get the slower speed...

I typically keep them in ammo cans. I have LiPo Sack's that go with me on road trips, but at home they're typically in the cans.

Make sure your ammo cans have a vent hole drilled in the lid.

Sounds like something may be awry with the charger. After 5-6 years, I would say you've had a good run and it's time to upgrade to a new charger (Hitec RDX1 PRO perhaps).

You should only have to select the lower speed setting in the transmitter. If this doesn't work, try and re-bind the receiver in the slower setting.
