Firm foams will result in much higher tire wear. The side walls are so stiff. Schumacher Tires wrote an article about it on AMain. I have tried both and I much prefer the soft foam.

Depends on the carpet, and if they allow spiked tires. Mini Spikes or Pin Down type tires do great usually, as do Swagger or low profile cut stagger type tires. Front rins on carpet use "skinny rims"...
