Sounds like you are possibly using the wrong sized wrench. On all of my Tamiya gear diffs I have always used the same 1.5mm wench I use to adjust the droop screws and have never stripped a screw head.

One thing to consider............. Your spool will likely weigh considerably less than a gear diff. This is rotating mass that directly affects the acceleration of your car.
