I think that's preference, the manual shows it opposite the spur gear, but some guys like to put it on the same side as the spur so they do all their adjustments (slipper/diff) from the same side.

Sounds like 48 pitch gears. Run 64 pitch. I've got mine geared 58/82 and the spur is pretty far from the bottom of the chassis.
