HPI's offroad selection is not going to be competition prone. From what I have seen they are very slow, and fragile on the track. I wouldn't recommend them...

If you are trying to increase your skills though, don't get a cheap car that you can't even use on the racetrack. A GT RTR, or XXXNT RTR would be much better setups, although Family Hobbies only...

Why not use the cash to make your electric a bit faster? Electric will always handle better than nitro. Work with one car at a time when you are learning.
