If I had to guess simply by seeing the wear on the gear I'd say what caused this was the pinion gear moving back into the diff. Did your pinion have any movement forward and back?

That variance won't cause that leak with the xrings. Did you build them dry? Did you tighten the bottom cap finger tight? Are they assembled correctly? Did you shove the shaft thru without lube...?...
