Not sure if it can be done without the hotwire since I never tried, but with the hotwire you just change the voltage cutoff by scrolling up all the way to 9.6, this will let the esc know that you are...

Thats the error code for the wrong motor type selected, hook up your hotwire and select the correct motor type and you should be good to go.....

At the bottom of the esc there will be either 3 holes or 4, that will tell you which one you have...... I've had mine for a few weeks and have had no issues with it whatsoever.......
