Default Brushless temp range

Just curious as to what temp do you guys find acceptable for brushless motor and esc. I am trying to build a thermal switch for my rc car cooling fan to kick in when it get to a certain temp instead of just being on 24/7

I don't let my Brushless Motor temperature go over 120F.

Safe running temperatures for the ESC and motor are 150f. Once you start to see 160f or more, it's time to change your gearing or check your drivetrain for binding.

Technically they can both take temperatures up to 200f. But if you run it that hot for too long you'll be melting something lol

During the middle of the summer heat, and in the blazing sun, I strive for a maximum temp of 160F.

A lot of it depends on the motor. For example lrp motors tend to run quite hot, but are still run and perform just fine.

160 is a good temp. Ive seen 180 with my tekin and quickly fixed it

Depends on the motor, had a Tekin pro4 4600 with temps in 160-175 range was good, but serious issues at 180, and yet had a castle 3800kv motor and after 2-3 minutes it would be 220-230, I ran the crap out of the castle, could not tell you how many packs thru it and still a super strong motor, and yet a Novak or old trinity and cooked at 165, so it all depends on the motor, but thinking most motors are ok at 160, but the other variables is the quality of temp gun

If you're going to get the Motor Temperature over 120-F; don't go over 5-Minute Runs.

The cooler the better. 130 is the max for me. Even if the motor magnets are good with hot temps, you may cook the lube from your bearings on some motors. Especially the Tacon 10T.

How are you gonna cook the lube in your bearings at 160 degrees? You can't even cook french fries at that temp.....

160 is generally considered the maximum safe temp for BL motors, some brands can and do run hotter. Older LRP motors were fine at 180 and I've seen sensorless Castle motors run fine at 200.

Performance gains over 150. Negligible at best in most cases.

Living in AZ we try to keep ours in the summer time 180 or lower. However for oval 13.5 boosted class we sometimes push close to 200. I can tell you from experience you don't want to reach the 210 - 220 range, cause smoke will follow

By the same token, if you're talking about a "spec" motor class, i.e. 17.5, and you're not hitting that temp, you are leaving some gear or can timing on the table.
People in that class aiming for 110-130f are handicapping themselves slightly.

Otherwise, yeah, I've never seen a motor bearing have an issue at a temp below what would fry something else first.

I agree, but then you have to factor in track type as well. Meaning, my indoor clay off road track is small and tight by industry standards. I actually have trouble getting temps above the mid 140's without having a performance fall off on way or the other.

Ambient temps can be an issue. I feel sorry for you guys running outside in the heat, especially on blacktop. Hard to stay when the surface you're racing on is pushing 150*
