Thinking about making the jump...
I have had 4 R/Cs in my time. All of which were electric. I'm considering buy another touring sedan or off road truck. I've always hated how short the run times can be for electric cars. So now I'm thinking about getting a gas car because 1) from what I've read they are faster and 2) they have longer run times.
I'm looking for advice, pros and cons, anythink you experienced hobbiest feel is important to know. |
As long as you don't mind getting a little dirty, there are no cons to nitro cars. You just drive and drive and drive until your fuel container is empty. Jump in the car and go and buy some more. YOU CAN'T BEAT THE SOUND AND SMELL OF A 2STROKE MODEL ENGINE GOING FLAT OUT.
|
"No cons"! I like the sound of that. Answer me this one... with electrics you usually just buy the kit, the radio, speed controller, motor. I've read articles on Nitro cars and maybe I'm not understanding what I'm reading, but from what I understood are more things you need to buy (with the exception of a motot) to get started. Is this correct?
|
yeah, you'll need starting equipment and fuel. Other than that is a case of go get smelly!
|
No cons  Look at the car after you've run it, then you decide if it's a con or not. Nitro's to finiky. :p

Gas:
lol.... no cons... SIF
electric is much easier to clean eg. no fuel, less dirt they are alot more expensive to maintain compared to electric gas cars or not nessicarily faster then electric... a 1/10th scale electric car holds the fastest speed record. Basically electric cars are much quicker eg. spool up / acceleration etc. but gas cars have more power and torque |
This is GREAT stuff. Exactly what I wanted... learn some ins and out on gas cars. I can't say that I would mind the extensive cleaning required. It's a hobby so I enjoy the cleaning and tuning aspects.
The biggest thing I dislike about electric is the run time and that "wear down" (where it's noticeably slower than it was with the fresh pack). I'm sure like that runs on gas, certain factors contribute to how long you run on a tank. But in general, about how long could you run on a tank in terms of lets say.... 5 minute heats? |
run time
It all depends on the capacity of your fuel tank...
+ how hard u accelrate and brak through corners and how smooth your line is.. most cars can handle 5 minutes with a stantard fuel tank |

Nitro vs Electric (just ask Grandma)
Grandma's wheelchair is electric. :(
Top Fuel Dragsters use "Nitro" :) "NITRO" is what REAL men race  (Just having some fun) I personally race both and Nitro is MUCH less work except for the cleaning part. Takes 10 minutes to clean instead of 2 minutes. Compare that to the time it takes to charge batteries. :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: :tire: |
RE: brad
Cool ill say hello next time i see ya ..
Do you race @ brush farm or mingara ?? im racing @ brush farm this friday night (29th) i might see ya there =) |
RE: sorry
ignore that last post ... wrong forum ... my bad... =(
so what about charging batteries .. charge one pack.. put on another and go race when race is over ur next pack is almost ready... |
WHOAAAAAAAAAAA... 5 minutes on a tank? <scratching head> One of the biggest reasons I want to go with gas is because I had it in my head that they could go considerably longer than you can with an electric (15 to 20 minutes). I guess these aren't Honda engines huh.. lol. Still, it will would be nice getting 5+ minutes of consistant power start to finish, rather than the 3 or 4 strong minutes and then 1 or 2 of diminishing power.
Was there any truth to the accelleration disadvantage that I heard someone speak of? |
JUMP!!!
JUMP!!! |
It all depends on the car/motor you are buying. If you end up with high performance motor, NO, in VIC there are a few elec guys who have made the change and love the power of Gas cars. Also different tracks effect the run time you are geting. At the two tracks i commonly race at i get 7min, and 6 min. But don't forget when are running low, fill er up and keep going!!!! You dont even need to stop the car. Finals for gas car racing are generally at least 15mins, you tell me which class is more challenging??
