Default D2 Dirtinator resistor exploded

Hello everyone!
I received a rc10 t2 it had a modified motor with it and looked new. It did not have the ground and power connected yet so I soldered them on and installed motor. It was being powered by a Traxxas 7.4 2200 mah battery along with a Traxxas xl5 ESC. The truck was very fast and ran flawless through 2 battery charges but on third charge it slowed to a stop. Steering worked fine and battery was OK. My soldering skills are not great yet so I reconnected the leads for power and ground. Powered up the truck and drove about 3 feet and the resistor exploded. Im not up to par on my electrical stuff either so I may be incorrect but by looking at other motors I believe resistor is correct. It is long and cylindrical. My question is does this mean that there is a internal issue with this modified motor or just possibly a bad resistor? Thanks for any help and it's great to be apart of your group!

Brushed motor? Probably the capasitor. I've had them blow up. Sounded like a firecracker. I just put another on and moved on. They have a + and - side so it matters wich way you put them.

Thanks for the reply! At what point do brushes need to be replaced? I have slid them out and they are worn the same amount both sides but being new at all this I'm not sure how much wear is to much. I know there is alot of brush left. Thanks Heath

Sometimes the brushes are worn or the ends of the brushes are burnt. Seems like the brushes are arcing or shorting out. Also, when I replace the brushes, I go ahead & replace the springs too.
