Racing tips: Learn when to take risks
When I learned to be risky only when a Marshall could see me easily or get to my vehicle quickly, I realized about a 6 second gain on average over all my total times, and I wasn't out of play as long and I placed better in races.
You can't win if you're upside down.

There are two types of risks encountered while racing - risks that affect you and you alone, and those that could affect others while in traffic. Skill eventually turns "risks" into "improvement opportunities" when you're away from traffic, but making risky moves around opponents tends to be an all-or-nothing proposition regardless of your personal skill level. You'll know you've arrived when you can take risks while amongst other competitors, and no one ends up on their lid. That usually comes with a lot of practice, and many times leads to a multi-car pileup in which you are marshalled last...
However, your initial premise does make sense... If you're gonna fail, make it happen in front of a marshal!!!

Excellent advice.
Before taking risks, get consistent. I found myself crashing at the same spot and had to go more conservative in that area.
Know your Marshall's. Sire, we run at the same track but I don't believe we've met. Take risks in front of Bobbo. Not so much with people who have trouble judging when to go or not go.
