Default motor lathe

What direction is the lathe suppose to turn?

On every comm lathe I've ever seen the armature should turn so that the top is moving away from you.

I'm pretty sure lathes can run either way. If like trips said the top is moving away (safest) then the sharp part of the bit has to be down, and vise-versa.

the direction of rotation DOES matter and yes the top of the COMM is supposed to move away from you, if rotation is the other direction the bit will not engage the comm properly and provide a cut that is not as precise (smooth) or tapered
