Default Newb here, no idea where to even start...

Hi everyone.

I just got a losi mini desert truck recently and I'm looking into upgrading it. I've been watching videos and reading forums for months now but I still don't even really know where to start. I'm mostly confused about the electronics/radio stuff.

I want my truck to go faster, so that probably means getting a brushless motor and/or lipos right? Can you even have one without the other? And getting lipos requires a better esc right? but then i'd need a new reciever, cause what i have now is a ecs reciever combo. So then how do you even know if all this stuff is compatible or will even have all the same connectors?

Sorry for the rant of questions, but it seems like everytime i learn something new i have more questions. Am I looking having to completly replace the electronics and radio? If so thats fine, it's part of the fun.

Well I'm very new to the RC world also but have been reading this forum non stop for a month.
To answer some of your questions...
If you want to use lipo batteries you will need a brushless motor and a esc that won't allow the battery to fully drain. FYI..I just bought my son an extra lipo, charger and charging bag (lipos can catch fire) paid $165 for the three. Then you will want a new transmitter and receiver for about $250.
This hobby gets a little expensive really fast.

If this is the truck you have http://www.losi.com/Products/Default...dId=LOSB0202T2 Then the ESC can handle a 2 cell lipo battery.

Here is a little bigger motor then stock with a lipo battery it should be a little faster. http://www.losi.com/Products/Feature...rodId=LOSB0837

A lipo battery is compatible with almost all Electronic Speed Controllers. What some ESC's need is a voltage cut off device. This wont let the lipo battery pack drop below a certain voltage.http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBKUD&P=7 It looks like the Losi has that already built in. so your good there. If you want to go brushless then yes you will need a new receiver and transmitter as well as an ESC.

Something like this would be an option http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDAWS&P=7 But you would need a new radio as well.
Here is an idea for a radio http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXZJ4&P=0 I recommend brands that i have had in the past or have now. You might some cheaper alternatives. I would look for equipment that you can grow into.

Never be sorry for asking questions it is how you learn . We were all new once.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm learning a lot. From the information I've been able to piece together over the past couple days I've put together a list that I think will work.

Tacon 2030-18T Brushless Motor 5200KV for 1/16 1/18 Car Trucks
HobbyWing EzRun-18A-SL Brushless ESC for 1/18 Car (Version 2)
LOSB9830
FlySky FS-GT2 2.4G 2CH
(I can't post links yet, sorry)

Will all of this be compatible? How do I even know if everything will have compatible plugs for the wires?
