Default What's the difference between a 540 and 550 motor?

I plan to race a stock 17.5 motor but I keep reading about these 2 different sizes. Which do I select?

a 540 and 550 are the same diameter, the 550 has a longer can.

Selecting between a 550 and 540 really depends on the vehicle you're going to be using it in. Some will only accept a 540.

540 sized motors are more for 1/10 scale buggy / truck...stuff like that. The 550 motor is meant for the larger/heavier stuff like the 4x4 short course stuff. If you are planning on 17.5 racing your only choice is the 540.

550 can also have a longer shaft where you attach the pinion. In some cases, it will not fit inside the plastic gear cover (like on 1/10 buggies for example).
