Best racing short course
Hello Everyone,
I am new to this site and wanted to ask a few of the veterans a few questions specific to a good racing short course. My son (10 years old) has been racing his 2x4 Slash. Yes, it is brushless and has a number of upgrades. He has actually done very very well since he has learned his trigger control and the capabilities of the truck. That said though, We have had many problems with it rolling over at high speeds around corners. My questions are this: 1.) Is it worth putting more money into the Slash in order to help reduce this problem? If so, what would you recommend? We have tried EVERYTHING the hobby store folks and locals have recommended. 2.) Would we be better off buying him a better truck (Losi or Team Associated)? If so, which truck/s would you recommend? What options, etc. He is really getting into the sport and is actually doing a great job. He is still competing against some of the hard core guys with top of the line vehicles. Again, we have asked for advice from a number of locals who race all the time and they are all saying that unfortunately, the ground clearance of the 2x4 Slash is causing most of the problems. Is that true? We truly have tried everything recommended. Any advice, guidance and thoughts would be most appreciated. We do plan on taking him frequently to the track to practice and to attend races because he loves the sport so much thus if I need to upgrade his vehicle I will. Thanks in advance for your help! |

As it stands now, it's a toss up between the Associated SC10, Kyosho Ultima SC, and the Losi. (in my opinion) However, within the next few months Team Durango will be releasing their DESC210R and Losi will be coming out with the 22SCT. A lot of rumors that the 22SCT will be "the truck" for this class. Time will tell. 22SCT - http://www.tlracing.com/Products/Def...ProdId=TLR0024 DESC210R - http://www.team-durango.com/race-cars/desc210r/ |
i agree with Herwig....i personally race an AE ft sc10...the factory team kit if much better than smoother than a rtr version. the kyosho is also a great truck. the hobby shops around here don;t carry many parts for it, thats why i run a AE
do you want to keep him in 2wd or maybe move him to 4wd? |
Sc-10 is the BEST.
MY little 8YR Bro loves it. |
I have to agree with all the above. I've raced or driven most Short Course trucks and I feel that the SC10 2WD is the most fun. Not sure where you're from, but if you happen to be in the Omaha area, your son is welcome to test drive any of mine :)

The Losi XXX platform is outdated...don't buy that unless the deal is AMAZING. It can still be somewhat competitive, but it doesn't have all that a newer race kit will offer. My friend has a 22T converted to an SC, and while it shows potential, it has been hard as heck to dial in to make it driveable. I assume the real kit will be better, but that hasn't hit yet and will have a period of time while people figure out setups on it. I've seen people running durangos and they like them, but parts support around here is not amazing for them. The track is typically dominated by Kyosho SCR SP's (which we also have good parts support for), with some of the Associated SC10 Factory Team folks doing very well too (but I would argue they're also better drivers).
One thing that Associated has going for it above just about everything else is the availability of setup sheets for just about every track and condition, making it easy to show up, copy a setup from somebody fast at the track, and go. If you have decent Kyosho support though, those are worth a good look at as well. Having a Kyosho buggy and working with a few folks that have the Kyosho SC and T, the build quality is great on the kit, as is the durability. There is *1* part that many Kyosho SC folks seem to break commonly, and that is the T plate. If you're crashing a bunch and do that, you should consider the APE aluminum replacement. Other than that, the Kyosho SCR SP's already have everything on it that you'll want, so put it together and win. :) |
my sc10 is pretty good. i would recommend one

What type of track do you run on? I race a vxl slash myself and win most club races in my area. Our tracks are outdoors and pretty loose. I can share my setup with you if you like. I have no knowledge of indoor clay setups, which is prolly more of a problem for the slash platform. Luckily for me I don't have to figure that one out. I'm not looking to argue with anyone over which platform is best. I have a slash and race it well, looking to share knowledge with a fellow slash driver that's all. Shoot me a pm if you're hoping to hang on to your slash, I may be able to help.

My friend owns 2 2wd sc10's and he seems to break them all the time. The arm breaking issue goes away with rpm arms. There is just a lot more stuff to go wrong with the sc10. My advice is to go with the durango or losi 22sct. Or...step up to the big boys class with a losi scte.

HPI Blitz is awesome and the Traxxas Slash is the biggest turd out of all 2wd short course trucks.

That's strange, my son and I both have an FT SC10 and we've found ir nearly impossible to break anything let alone an arm.

There are really only two competitve choices in 2wd SC right now, the Kyosho and the FTSC10. Between those two, it comes down to if you're willing to pay the extra for the Kyosho to have less than half the slop in the parts.
I think you could make a 4wd Slash competitive in that class if you threw enough money at it but doubt the same holds for the 2wd one or it would wind up costing more than just buying one of the aforementioned cars. Never seen a competitive Blitz. The XXX-SCT is dated. The Durango looks interesting but few shops stock their parts and you'll probably be the only guy at your track with one making you the local setup guru instead of being able to just ask someone else for help. I fear the 22SCT will have the same problem as the 22t - it'll be a tank. By me, most 22T's have been shelved out of the stadium truck class because the lightest one we've seen weighed half-a-pound more than the average AE car making them a real struggle to get competitive in a 17.5 blinky class. If the 22SCT is the same way, it'll be another best-selling car turned dust collector in a hurry. |
