YoYo-im pretty sure a rotary speed control is same as a mechanical speed control, same thing but different name...

Yep rotary and mechanical are the same. If you use a mechanical you'll need a second servo and enough room on your chassis to mount it.

If I'm not mistaken this looks like the top of your motor except your motor is a different color and it has no caps or doide's. On one side you'll a little plus symbol *+* and to the right of that is the brush housing, that side is positive and you connect the pos wire to one of the large tabs, the neg side(left side) is the other and you connect the neg wire to it. The little tabs are for the caps to connect to The green things are the caps(for reducing glitching)and you use 3, one goes from the pos to the neg, one goes from the pos to the little tab and one goes from the neg to the little tab. In this pic you see a scotty doide(not sure how to spell it) but the pos side is the side with the silver strip and it is used with fwd only seedo's to increase efficency and to reduce motor heat and glitching and arching.

I suggest you go to this site, it's a good site and Bryan put alot of work into it, and still does. http://www.balakracing.com/comm.htm Also check out his other articles. Hope this helps.

alrite. . i got 2 of those green wired things .. but i don't have that scotty diode thingy.. the silver and black thing.. do i really need it? .. but for the green things.. i'm not sure how it's put on ... ok .. i got one on the POS side and one on the NEG side .. are they suppost to be soldered onto the middle tab(in between the POS and NEG tabs)? or are they suppost to hang off and touch each other outside the engine?(like how it looks in picture #2 of ur post fatdoggy) ...ne ways.. u guys really know what u guys are doing.. i really appreciate ur guys' help .. thanx alot

oh wait.. sorry.. i see that the scotty diode is for FWD only speed controls ... so i'm guessing i don't need it if i plan to go reverse... .. does that mean i can connect my wires from my ESC to those NEG and POS side?.. since they are un-used?..

No doide's are not necessary but I would recomend them if your going to race. No the caps arn't supposed to hang off like that, your supposed to solder one end of them on at the big tabs and poke them through the small tab hole and solder it there too. Then you can then snip off the excess wire and your done. About the doide if you hit reverse with it on the motor you'll destroy the doide and have to get another one. If you have reverse just forget the doide. Don't use all 4 tabs just use 2 one neg and one pos, if you used all four I have no idea what would happen, but my guess is that it wouldn't be good. I think the explorer is fwd and brk isn't it so there is no way you can set it up as a reverse unless you solder the neg and pos opposite to what I told you and set the timing on the motor to *0* timing, I think it would work alright with no screw ups but you would have no fwd so it's kind of not worth it unless you want to drive around backwards. Also only two caps come with the speed gems so just put them on as shown in the pics it should run fine with just the two of them. If you have any more Q's please keep them coming(the more everybody knows the healthier the hobby is)

Also if you poke end of the cap wire from the front in (through the small tab) it will look neater then having it poking through from the back. Not needed but looks better.

Right futher mucking on ! !
I could have written that. I can only add that the good side to RTRs is that you can get the instant enjoyment. And then learn about the repair part as you crash it or upgrade stuff. I 've seen more than a few guys buy an RTR, but later they want a 2nd car, they buy a kit.

As for Mom and Pop shops, well most are good but some are shockers, I have one near me that isn't really a mom and pop shop but isn't a chain and they make a bundle from people who walk in and say they want an R/C and don't shop around to find a good price first. I mean c'mon when a shop is selling the TL01 for $240 US you know there is something wrong. I like tower but If ever start racing and buy a sedan or a 1/12th scale I will probibly get it from the track that I will be racing at as long as the price range is less then $30 more or less, and if they are nice I will go back and buy from them again. Your right when you say that the big chains are killing the mom and pop shops but I think that the mom/pop shops with tracks will still live to see another day.
Very well put FATDOGGY!!!I will add only one thing.I too am against buying a rtr,but what about all those people that would never be able to buy a kit + engine + pipe + servos etc. if they didn't buy a rtr.The rtr 's make it easier to get started in the hobby without having to sell everything you own to buy everthing seperate.Yes I think most of the rtr's out there are junk, but there are also some acceptable one's .I got started in this hobby by getting a rtr.I learned a little ,decided I liked r/c ,then moved on to a kit.I think if I would have gotten the kit first I would have had a harder time and probably gotten alot more frustrated, therefore losing interest in my project!
Anyways , there are arguments supporting both sides but all in all I think ready to runs sort of help the hobby to grow, which is all I really want.I wish every one could have an r/c to enjoy!I think the World would be a better place if more people rc'd!!

Some articles that the new people might find helpful:

Comm Cutting and Motor FAQs

Battery FAQs

Differential Maintenance

Soldering Techniques

Roll-Out Calculation

Also, I am thinking about adding another links section to other sites like mine which offer articles and reviews. If you have a site like mine, email me a link.

Default Rally in Minnesota?

JeffC this one is for you....

I am thinking about getting the HPI RS4 Rally and I was wondering if you know of any places in our lovely sub-arctic state that actually races rally? I am way up north in Bemidji and the closest track here (other than the one in town) is Crookston.

Also one for everyone...

Could someone post a quick comparison of the Hpi Rally, Losi Rally Weapon, and the TC3 Converted Rally? I have read about everything I can about the rally cars on here and have yet to find an unbiased comparison. I know that people have their favorites and that is cool, but I am really looking for a performance/durability comparison.

Thanks!
