Ball bearing oil

I know how to remove the rubber seals and clean out bearings, but what do you guys like for bearing oil?

Anyone try synthetic motor oil?

I'm going through a neglected XX-4 and I have 22 bearing assemblies to clean and lube.

Some people do use Mobil One motor oil. It's actually what Avid recommends if you don't buy their house brand of lube. In a similar manner, I personally have had very good results with spraying this stuff into a needle bottle and using it as RC bearing lube.

Thanks MarkA, good info. I know XX-4's are friction-whores. I want to make sure everything is as smooth as possible. Hopefully 5w20 Pennz Platinum is ok- I found some around the shop.

That should work fine. I use the mobile 1 myself.

While for a bearing that should work just fine.

I'll give you a little fyi;) comparison of Mobil 1 vs. a standard oil....Back in the day (1997-2002) when I ran 1/24 slot cars many classes required the use of oillite bushings. If you were to or ever have applied heat to one of these you would actually see them excrete fluid/oil as you heated them. Some bushings you could buy were MUCH harder and smother BUT the use of anything other than Mobil 1 or an equivalent synthetic oil would cause them to cease onto the axle from the friction.

Pointless when talking about bearings but my point is that there is a difference between Mobil 1 and a standard oil. As far as a high heat/pressure application is concerned.:)

I hate to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm going through the forums from a while back... Now, I was thinking of getting a dry silicone spray as a lubricant, but people actually use Mobil 1...

Would the spray be effective, or are people pretty set on using an oil based lubricant?

I have tried many types of bearing lube since 1987 . Mobil 1 has been the best for me.

Best bearing oil I use is Bones Speed Cream for all applications. Google it and it comes in a little bottle meant for skate board bearings.

I've had that little bottle for about 2 years now. One drop per bearing is all you need.

Huh... What do you use to apply it without making a TOTAL mess?

Speedfreakzx10r 01-02-2012 09:02 AM

Hi Here's my two cents. Being in the bearing business for over 16 years now If you are gonna use some kind of light weight lube I would recommend a lube called Inox mx-3. I belive they sell it a ACE hardware if you dont have one around you im sure you can find a distributor in your area. Any questions feel free to ask.

Speed:D

Just get something like this and refill it with what you want to use. I use Mobile 1.
