Questions?? Hot ESC?

I noticed this while bashing a while ago. It's a 1/10 touring car, not even driving it hard.

My ESC gets hotter than the motor. At least the heatsink does. neither motor or ESC feel burning hot but the ESC feels much hotter than the motor.

I'm guessing the suggestions will be to gear the car down but I hope I won't need to do that.

Just using 3000mah nimh batteries although I have a 5000mah 40c LiPo I have not tested on it yet. Kinda worried to try the lipo with this issue.

If this is a problem, what are all the available options to resolve this?

Any advice helps,
thanks

Zac

Try gearing it down a little -just a couple of teeth on your pinion should do the trick. Also, make sure your gear mesh is good and not too tight.

Also, invest in a temp gun. This way you can put a number on it to tell if it is truly running too hot. then you can get your gearing right.

Thanks for the reply

Getting a temp gun soon.

The motor barley gets hot at all and the cars already slow enough as it is compared to other 13.5 tc.. But a working ESC is better than a slower car

What would be a too hot temp for the ESC?

160 or below is safe. Try going up a tooth or 2 on the pinion or drop spur size.

I thought going up on pinion size caused hotter motors/esc?

And the ESC can safely be 160?? That's really hot and I don't think I should worry about mine anymore, it doesn't get that hot.

Default Temp

Which ESC are you using? Some require a capacitor which keeps the temp down on the ESC.

Generally, if your motor is cool and your esc is hot you need to either go up on your pinion or down on the spur. If the motor is hot and the esc is cool you should drop the pinion size or go up on the spur.

The max temp you should see and consider safe is 160f or below on both the motor and esc. Of course, cooler temps on either is better.

It's a Novak Havok, I'm pretty sure it has a capacitor on it.
