need some advice please

I have an orion 12 turn motor with tazer 12t esc using 5000 mah lipo 30c battery now my esc is getting hot and shutting off does anyone have any advice

sounds like ur overgeared perhaps.

doi need a certain esc to handle lipo power

BuggyKing 01-18-2011 08:33 PM

Most of the ESC's today will handle 2s lipo with no problems.

To much gear...

As stated above... I think you are over geared. Try install a pinion gear with 2-4 less teeth on it and see if the heat problem with the ECS improves. It is typical that you may need to drop a tooth or two when upgrading to lipos due the the increased power output.

Temp

Check your motor temp at the end of a 5 minute run (if you las that long). You should be close to 150 degrees. Any more, too much gear, any less, go up a pinion.

You need to see what your ESC is listed for. If it can't handle down to your 12T, then either go to a lesser motor, or buy the ESC that can handle the power. Assuming you can handle the power, why not race in a speck class that required driving skill and setup to outdo your competition? Just a couple cents worth.

Thanks for the help!!!! We are going to get a smaller pinion....We dont know about the classes yet...I just got a tmaxx 2.5 for x mas and i also just bought my wife the duratrax evader we have been making hers better...This is why we are trying to find everything out so we can find out specs and rules for racing it...Thanks Mike

Your esc has thermal protection but does not have the low voltage cutoff you need to run lipo. It can run lipo as far as the voltage is concerned, but you're on your own to prevent overdischarging a lipo since there's no lvc. You could add a separate add on type lvc if you wanted to. Here's the spec on the esc -

LVC

thank you for info do you reccomend any certain lvc or is any sufficient what kind of run time do you think i'll get with 5000 30c lipos what voltage level do i need to look for if i dont have LVC

You don't want to discharge lipo below 3v/cell or 6v for a 2S lipo. You can damage one that way. There's a Novak 2S Smart Stop that's set for 6.25v like this -

Or you can try timing your runs which if you're bashing usually doesn't work well. On a track, timing runs works pretty well.

If you assume about 200mah/min, then you'd have 20min run time. Thats prob on the pessimistic (low) side. You don't want to pull more than 80% of a lipos capacity during discharge - you won't get good life that way.

thanks

That is good info thanks me and wife are going to mobile alabama this weekend to try and get a feel of how all this works What kind of tires do you like are the pokey tires to loose or is that good for racing i love the hobby hopin i can get every one in family to enjoy it as much as me
