ESC getting hot

ESC getting hot
I have a HPI sprint 2 it has a 20t pinion gear and a 90t spur gear 48 pitch. It has a 14t trinity flatliner brush motor with a SC-15 HPI ESC and I have a 7.2 v 3000 nimh battery. The ESC gets real hot after 2-3 minutes of driving it. Could the ESC be to small to handle the motor. If it is what would be a better ESC to run on it to avoid this problem. I am new to this any help would be helpful.

I think that ESC is only rated to 15 turns, if so that would be the problem.
If you are looking for the cheapest possible upgrade I recommend looking at the Duratrax Intellispeed series. They do not have a Lipo cutoff, but they will be hard to beat for the price. Another cheaper option is to look for something used on this forum or Ebay. That way you could get a good high end ESC for less, but as you should know there is always a risk if you dont know who you are buying from. Finally, if you are the type of person who goes all out when you buy, look at Brushless/Brushed ESCs from Castle, Tekin, or Novak, that way you will be money ahead when you decide to upgrade to brushless.

Yes ESC is too "small" to handle that motor. Gearing down will help as will running a LiPo but you really should look into a new "Speedo".

Its a great ESC, but you should compare what else you can get for the cost. That ESC is designed for racing and does not have reverse at all. If you found one used for a good price then it might be worth it, but for the cost of that ESC new, you could pick up a complete brushless system that will last MUCH longer.
