Well... for the most part you get what you pay for. I use Orion/Kokam packs and have been very happy with them for the past year racing. They rarely need balancing and when they do, they are still very close. Most of my buddies use Orions as well.. no problems really. You can go cheaper but you may be asking for problems. If you are going to skimp on something, go for a more budget minded charger. Many folks at our local track are using the Duratrax Onyx 230... it runs about $80 and runs off of AC and DC. Good, reliable and does the job. As for the batteries, you only need 1 or 2. I race 2 classes and run just 2 batteries. Never really need more, though I have 5 batteries. I can just put the one I raced with back on the charger and its all good before my next race.
Good luck!

What brushless motor are you running? People seem to be happy with the Onyx 230 as stated. We need to now the motor so we can recommend a lipo big enough to handle it.

I'm using a 35C 5000mah IB pac that fits perfectly in the Slash running a Sidewinder/5700 combo. My data recorder shows it has no probs keeping up with the average 23amp motor demand and occassional 100amp spikes.
Unless you want to go to a DC powered charger and but overseas, the Onyx is a good recommendation.

SMC packs get my vote. For like $80 you can get a 5200mah/28C.
I would think a pack with at least 4000mah and 20C would do the trick.
I would want at least 80 amps continuous.
(mah x C rating) divided by 1000 = amps
(4000 x 20)/1000 = 80

I'm using the onyx 230 also. its fine... Nothing fancy but it meets my standards. Then again it was like $80! Though i have ben having some trouble charging my Venom 5000 mAh. If someone thinks they can help please look at my thread, its in the rookie section also titled 'Battery trouble'.

Its a measure of how many amps lipo can generate on discharge - a 5000mah 30C lipo for example can generate 5000/1000 x 30 = 150amps.
There are usually two of these, a continuous rating (smaller number) and a burst rating that is the same type thing but for what lipo can generte for 30seconds. You don't see the burst rating mentioned much, its usually twice the continuous rating.
