Default Official "rookie dont do" thread

i just thought it would be good to start a thread listing all the things a rookie shouldnt do. like:

1. if you have a truck, dont drive it without the roll bar/cage
2. make sure to break in/ tune you engine properly(nitro)
3. be aware that these vehicles are fixable and dont leave them broken on a shelf.

thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

learn from our mistakes.
post more!

Always keep a stock of spare parts. Mainly parts related to your suspension.

Don't buy any car you can not get parts for.

No one has mentioned these yet...

Don't buy ""bargain no-name" cars from the Internet and then expect your local hobby shop to service and tune it for free.

Don't buy ANYTHING from the Internet if it's in stock at your local hobby shop (assuminig your local hobby shop isn't a ripoff palace, there are a few of those around)

If you want to race, try and make all your hobby purchases at the track you'll be racing at. If you don't support hte track, pretty soon you won't have a place to race.

Don't get caught up in spending a ton of money on hop-ups and bling... learn to drive and practice as much as you can. You can't buy success on the track until you're driving well enough to need better equipment. Most new racers won't be driving that well for the first couple of seasons.

DO make sure everything on your car is working correctly... no bindiing or excessive slop anywhere, no bad solder joints, and keep everything clean clean clean. It's hard to make any progress if your car is fighting against you.

DO ask the fast guys for advice, but hopefully not when they look real busy crunching to get their ride ready for the next heat...

DON'T get discouraged if you don't feel you're making progress quickly enough... for most of us, it's a long process.
