Default Motor Gear Question

Ok, This makes me sound like a REAL newbie, but can someone tell me what gear I should use for different applications? I was using a 13 tooth in my blackfoot and it seemed real slow. Should I be using a higher gear? I have other cars too that I am working on so if someone can tell me what gear is best for what application that would realy help me.

It depends on what tooth count your spur is, and the track you'er racing on. I've found of much easier to gear by temperature. It's quick, and there's no math involved. Just race it around for 5 minutes and check the motor temperature. Then gear up to 150-175F.

BTW, when he says "gear up", he means either put on a larger pinion or a smaller spur gear

Gotcha. Ok, Here is what I have.... Blackfoot, 48T Spur gear, motors to choose from... (Race Prep, B&r Bullet, Bullet pro or Magnum). Can you help me determin what gear would work best? Any Idea where I can get specs on these motors so I can use this chart someone else told me about? Thanks alot.

Don't mean to jump your thread but I to have a few gearing questions. Im was running a 5400kv with 3cell 1250 Mah lipo on stock mini t gearing. I was having issues with the pinion gear slipping up/off and couldnt keep it down. I put a metal pinion gear with an allen screw that screwed it down nice. I think it has less teeth than the stock one but had a larger diameter. I definatly saw an improvement in speed (clocked at 51mph). Does the diameter have any affect on gearing or is it strictly tooth count. Also I am running very cool. My ESC is not even warm, and motor is barely warm to touch. Does that mean I should change gearing and could see an even greater speeds. If so to go faster do you go up in teeth or down??? In my head less teeth would mean faster. Is that correct. Thanks.

generally speaking, more teeth = faster.

Might not be a gearing problem... Those are some pretty old motors.. same era as the Blackfoot... Have you maintained the motors? Clean, cut the comm, changed brushes and oiled it regularly? Could be a worn out motor too... the newer brushed motors are sooo much faster than the older ones...

What kind of speed controller are you using? The original mechanical kind run by a servo? Those need to be cleaned too... or is it Electronic?

The Blackfoot cant handle too much speed.. it breaks pretty easy. It's a good looking putt around truck though!
