Default first R/C car

Hi everyone,
My brother got a Traxxas Rustler for Christmas. We went to a housing development near my house to try it out. I was very impressed with its durability, speed, and maneuverability. At one point my brother even got it to climb up a huge 4 foot mound of dirt and rocks. Then he let me try it, never have driven a real R/C car before, I didn't know what I was in for. Again, I was very impressed by the durability as I crashed it pretty hard a few times getting used to the controls. After a minute I had it jumping over dirt mounds and doing figure eights and after a few minutes I was reluctant to give back the controller. So basically, I have to get a car for myself.

I've been saving up for a little while and I have what I'm willing to spend on my first R/C car... about $250. With a transmitter, the Tamiya 1/10 scale electric cars are within my budget and I really like the looks, specifically the Dark Impact. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMFW1&P=0
Would this car be able to compete with my brothers rustler? I'm mainly concerned about durability as I don't want to waste this investment on a car that can't take crashes, small rocks and jumps. If not, what would be a better car (for rough off-road conditions) in the 200-300 price range? I would consider getting a nitro gas-powered car but I figure with my little experience I should start out with an electric.

So to recap, I'm looking for
A kit + radio + battery within the $200-300 price range
Must be very off-road capable and durable
Able to beat my brother's Rustla in an off-road race

Also, would it be a good idea to get a more expensive transmitter with memory in case I decide to buy another car (which would probably be nitro powered)?

Thanks for reading, awaiting your recommendations!

if you are wanting to get a truck that is as durable as your brothers i would suggest that you get a losi rtr or an associated rtr and you will be alot more happier with either of these than you would be with a dark impact. you can get either one of these trucks for 250-300 dollars.

Hey Anthony,

I haven't had much experience with the Dark Impact...but I do know someone who has it, and says that it is very delicate.

I have a feeling if you also get a Rustler, then you guys will not only be competing in the track, but for parts. I think for variety's sake, you should not get a rustler. Unless you wanted to show him that you are the better driver by beating him with the same car... hehe...

Check out the Evader. Hopefully someone else will comment on this, because I have never used this either.

Good luck

Id get an AE &4 or B4. If you ever wanted to race you would have the car to do it with.

yes awsome truck.... a rustler is not bad ether. if you do get a losi. you will smoke him in every race you guys have.. if you get a rus-rus you will be even and can share parts... i have had both traxxas and losi. there is a reason i call my self losi god, not traxxas god... go losi and tell your bro to get rid of his rus-rus and get a losi too if you get a rustler get the ball diff right away and cvds

hey guys, thanks for all your replies. right now I'm considering the xxx-t sport or the evader but I kind of wanted to get a kit and put it together to have a better understanding of the components. More suggestions are welcome.
