i would look for a 6.5 brushless system, and a lipo battery is just a much better battery, last a long time, with great power...

Run it as stock and get as much wheel time as you can. When your laptimes are consistant you know its time to get it all going faster...

Remember, its unlikely you'll win a race on the first or last lap when youre new to the hobby, but boy its VERY easy to mess up the laps inbetween, so make sure theyre all good

It is all about consistancy... for now 13 years in r/c and I am still having bad days with it.

What is the main truck they are running at the track? Most of your better drivers usally run a Losi or associated truck. Duratracks is a good learning truck but once you get better you might want to upgrade trucks, I dont think I'd stick much money in this one and just upgrade it later to a losi or associated they both are top of the line offroad trucks.

Slower is FASTER. If you can get around the track with out wrecking you'll be in good shape. Find a good speedyou can make a lap with out wrecking then after a couple of good laps try to speed up a little at a time.
The most commin mistake made by rookie's is trying to go faster than they can drive. Untill you can get around the track with out wrecking you wont be winning any races. Rember it just takes time and LOTS of practice.
Good luck
Aaron
