Default wire and connectors?

ok I have a few questions:
1. with deans plugs, does it matter which direction you put them in, like the prongs on the motor side or the prongs on the esc side of the connection?
and does 12 gauge wire really make that big of a difference versus like 14 gauge?
also, are there any connectors better than deans plugs?
thanks in advance

when used with batteries the male tends to go on the esc and the female on the batteries.

The main thing to consider is that you do not want the prong side to be on the side that can short out and blowup your stuff.

If you put the prong (the male end) on the battery, you can short your battery by a screwdriver or anything metal laying across the 2 prongs and touching both ends of the prong. So you put the female end on your battery. On that same note for your motor connection, you want to put the prong end on your motor. If you put the prong end on the esc, you risk shorting your esc if your battery is plugged in and your motor is not.

Hard to say about 12 vs 14 gauge without knowing what you are powering, but I'd guess 14 gauge is probably good enough.

thanks for all the info. I am just trying to get the most out of my crappy batteries and speed control without spending much so wire and deans seemed like a good way to do it, if you know of anything else I could do that would be great.
