Smile Best gift for a NEW RC hobbyist

Hi there,

My girlfriend has recently shown ALOT of interest in RC cars. She doesn't know much about it but started buying some magazines and visting the local hobby shops.

Her birthday is in 2 weeks and I wanted to surpise her with her first unassembled car kit. I don't really know anything about this stuff at all but I'm finding your site very helpful! Do you have some suggestions for first time kits and/or supplies I should get her to start? I'm interested in the best stuff which is why I'm here talking to you experts =)

Thanks in advance

-Taylor

Hey Ganapati,

If she is really really new to the RC world, I'd go with a Mini Z. I personally have never driven one, but they are infamous with being as customizable as the larger scales. I have an X-mod from RadioShack, which to some are a clone of the Mini Z. However, I don't know how Mini Z's will do on a real road...

What kind of driving is she into? Drifting? Off roading? Will you be going to a track regularly?

If you know she will be serious, I can really recommend the Tamiya TT-01 Touring chassis. They're relatively cheap and the chassis is pretty sturdy. However, there are tons of other chassis that are great, I just have no experience with them.

Describe what you think she'd be doing with the car, and we'll be able to help you out better

1/12th scale carpet... get her a comm lathe, tire truer, and a turbo 35 gfx charger. oh, dont forget the electrics. get a 2.4 ghz module and that fancy futaba transmitter, then buy a 100$ servo, and a 200$ esc!

or you could get her a b5, she could drive it in her living room just fine! or in the street. run it into people and break thier ankles!

lol, jk.

maybe you should just get her a rtr: learning to drive will be as frustrating as building one, and you dont want her to throw it in a closet when she gets discouraged. get something she can drive right off the bat.

my .02...

it really depends wat she is looking at
-on road, offroad
- gas, electric (i recomend electric to start with)
-Racing, Bashing, Drifting
-space to use ----- major ( cant run 5th scale in ur living room)
-hobby shop stock (Or local racer preference)

i say mini-z overland, it was my first rc and its fun for driving in dirt, on the carpet, over the furniture, it can handle small jumps too. its a bit sluggish though so get her an x speed to and itll go fast enough

well at this point it may be very important to show her true hobby grade r/c, not a toy r/c.

i think 1/10th electric would be good to start with. if onroad, a tc4 rtr. if offroad, a b4 rtr. those are 2 good rtr's that she can get started with. if you get har anything smaller, she'll think its a toy or something despite what the hobby is.

good luck!
