Default Good/Bad idea to buy used nitro motors off ebay?

I'm just a novice R/C guy, not looking to be racing or anything. Just wondering what are some things I should look for when buying used Nitro motors off ebay. Many say there's good compression left but who knows. Anyone ever buy one off ebay before?

I have a HPI RS4, pretty old school. Just need to replace the motor because it's not working anymore. If anyone has a used engine in good condition they want to get rid of, let me know!

Some ways to buy used stuff are better or worse than others. I wouldn't buy a used motor off Ebay. I would consider a used one from a reputable racer in the for sale forums here. Even though you may not be a racer yourself, a racer will generally be selling better cared for stuff, IMO.

You can also try posting a WTB add in that forum here - describe what you need/want and see what pops up.

Buying a used engine off eBay is the same thing as buying a paper weight.

Ok thanks for the reply guys...I see engines go for like $0.99 starting bid. I guess you get what you pay for.
