Well a lot depends on local availability but the Tamiya Eurotrucks are a popular low cost class, keeping upgrades to the bare minimum.

TT01s (or TT-02s) with touring bodies can be run to similar simple rules.

Or Tamiya Minis are a popular simple class. Normally you'd allow more hop-ups but with limited gearing and a brushed motor it's still an inexpensive class.

I've put a lot of thought into this. And.. I keep coming back to the TT02. It's a car you can build in a couple hours. It's a car that if you REALLY screw it up, you're never out more than $20, and 10 minutes.

The downside of "hobby grade build" is you're now hanging people out to dry with servo choice. Also the TT02 comes with a really bad servo saver. It means the information package you need to give to a new driver is a bit bigger.

What surface? parking lot.

Eurotruck or Traxxas 4tec instantly come to mind. Traxxas makes a rally car too.

Traxxas 4Tec 2.0

It's not a "race car" by any means, but for a fun, consistent, easy, fast, plug-n-play option you can't beat it. Several tracks are starting to run spec 4Tec classes. With USGT tires, a better servo, radio and body it's actually pretty decent to drive... sounds like rocks in a blender though.

Tamiya TA02?

Widely available as Tamiya keep ReRe'ing it, relatively cheap, and better than a TT01/02?

Or M07? No hopups needed as great out of the box. Or stock M05 with only bearings and hardened pinion allowed as an upgrade (cheaper kits than the M07/08 and include a body).

I'd pick a TT01 over a TA02 any day. Parts support for the TA02 is far worse, it's more expensive, and the drivetrain is a lot more inefficient.

If you're going to replace that much stuff in the 4Tec then you've blown most of the value proposition. Cheaper to grab something like an Xpress XQ2S plus a dirt cheap brushed ESC motor combo.

This topic was pretty much covered in the TT-02 thread and I even posted the "TTGT" class rules my club followed. Basically, box stock Tamiya TT-02 with ball bearings (any kind), USGT tires, and a set of CVD shafts in the front as the stock dog bones tend to fall out. Go have a read.
