64p vs 48p
Lets say there is 2 rc car. Totally the same inside out BUT one is geared with 64p gearing & anothet is geared with 48p gearing.
So which car will be faster? |

So which car will be faster? on other hand your 48p could be twice as fast as you’re 64p if the gearing is right ? Tino |
.
tooth strength ,,, reason 32 p was popular for dirt... 64 pitch is smoother then both... less friction. speed is very debatable... just more gearing choices.. I run 64p.. carpet and dirt... cause I have over (25) 64 pitch pinions... |
Gear pitch alone will NOT make one faster than the other. Tooth strength is greater on 48p than 64p as mentioned above. Same rollout......same speed. 64pitch will be a little more quiet and smooth sounding but no faster.
|
64p also offers more fine tunning option.
Both are equal speed wise, your gearing based on rollout not on equal tooth count. |
Generally, 48p is 1/10 offroad while 64p is onroad. The 48p teeth are bigger and stronger while 64p teeth are lighter and smaller (weaker). On short course it really depends on the car you have.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I am still thinking of either changing to a 64p or stay with 48p. The reason I am asking is that I am currently doing off roading only, so 48p is common in my toolbox. I am now going on road too, its either I make my on road setup standard as my off road (48p) so less headache in stocking my pinion & spurs as I can used the same pitch on either of my rcs. Or just go for 64p on road but this will make me shop new sets of spurs & pinions. I never bother about speed & such for off road as I just enjoyed my rc time off road. No race no nothing. So now I am thinking for my on road rc, which will be faster? Same FDR, setup & all, 48p or 64p. |
.
my guess is money...... number of 48p gears.. in your tool box... on-road is almost always 64p... as gearing is important.. and 64p gives you the most . an on-road cars has limited space for spur/pinion sizes. but you would NOT be the first with 48p on a pan car... |
Gear ratio is independent of gear pitch. If both cars have the same gear ratio, they would theoretically have the same speed. (In practice I suspect 64 p might be very, very slightly faster, due to less friction, but I've never tried. I also suspect you wouldn't really feel it unless you were some kind of pro.)
Personally I'd stick with 48p, unless you are running a pan car. 48p is also stronger and easier to set mesh if you have bad eyesight like me / are new to rc. Seeing that you already have 48 pitch gears, why not save yourself the money and spend it on hopups/electronics? |
I think 48p is more suitable for beginner because it is easier to adjust the position between pinion gear and spur gear. Also,i think it is more durable than 64p.
When I was using the 64p,i think the 64p have better acceleration(my own feeling:lol:)and it is more silence than 48p. |
i like 48 pitch for both onroad and off road

Just use a sheet of paper to set your mesh?
This isn't rocket science guys. |
On paper 64dp would be better due the smaller tooth contact giving less resistance. The difference is nevertheless very small. Add to that the total rotating mass and resistance of the drivetrain and wheels and the difference will fade into nothing.

Off-road I would go for 48pitch unless I need finer gearing ratio to suit the motor/track.
