Default How much of a performance hit do 'copters take when the props are "protected?"

Such as enclosed in a mesh, outer brim, etc. I'm assuming if there is a hit it's very much dependent the overall surface area of material? I have no formal engineering background at all. My searches, albeit limited, haven't brought sufficient answers / theory.

Crash and burn me if too noob. Thanks peeps.
