Default Looking into Quadcopter

Just looking for some advice on possible getting a quadcopter. I really wanted to know if its a good idea to go straight for a quad or start with a helicopter. I have been racing cars for years and fancy a change. I have no experience with planes or choppers so am a total newbie to this.
So basically is it worth me learning on a chopper first if so what type ?
If not what set up should i be looking at ?

Quad is easier to fly for sure., but pricey (Quad 330X)
Co-axial helis are a good way to get started, they are very stable
A Sim is a good investment

Cheers for the advice. So would you say it's worth going straight for the quad if I can afford it ? I will probably get a spektrum transmitter as I use them for my cars and am happy with the brand.
