Solar D770/771 out of box issues
 

I have had several of my beloved solar D771 and D770 servos arrive with issues lately. Some are very glitchy and others die within several runs. Like my favorite cheap blue escs, It looks like I have had bad fortune with Solar quality control.

How are your Solar servos holding up? I am considering ditching cheap electronics altogether.

Cheap electronics are always hit and miss, you definitely want to test them within the first 30 days and generally any problems should be honored by the distributor, if they give you any grief, then usually PayPal will offer buyer protection.

I would caution that Solar servos do best on HV, however it's very important to properly set your end points... if you put too much stress on the servo where it binds past what is mechanically possible in the steering throw, then you can burn up any servo in seconds :(

If you decide to go with name brand servos, be sure they offer a true service center and have the ability to repair servos after your warranty has expired. There are many brands which offer warranty, but don't have true service centers which kind of defeat the purpose of the higher expense in the first place.

My strategy has been to rely on budget servos with backups of a budget servo where I have an instant replacement if something goes wrong... any high end servo could force you to miss 1 or more race days waiting for service.

I stopped trusting Solar servos many years ago and have migrated to PowerHD (also rebranded through Turnigy) and recently have been having really good luck with the brushless servos from JX.

I always throw electronics (name brand too) in something just to make sure they are good. I have a spare 770 that when it came in I used for a track day and put it back in the box as intended to use for a spare.

That being said I had a d772 that was a problem out of the box. I had to send a video to hobbypartz showing it not working right and got an rma quickly. It did cost me return shipping to get a new one but I take that as the risk of using such a cheap servo. Replacement is a year old and still working fine.

If I had multiple problems I would switch brands.

Excellent points guys thank you. Checking endpoints is something I often neglect. The issue I have had with 3 of the last servos is a weird glitching-like behavior without installing the servo. This is not radio/receiver related as older solars worked fine. I think QC has let a bad batch slip by. I really liked the servos too.

My solar d771 and d770 have been going strong for a while now. I am not an everyday driver and I tend to go fairly easy on my stuff. performance wise they have been really great. I bought mine back in 2013 and they have been good. I did take a hiatus from the racing circuit for a couple years tho. I was just marveling the other day at how fast the d770 was at the track and that was only with 5.5 volts. but torque was wanting. they def. need HV to be at there best for torque.

I recently borrowed a Savox 1258tg from a friend and liked it so much I bought one for myself. it is double the price but as I notice the slop developing in my solars.. it think the savox will easily pay for itself in the long run. can be found for $50ish. well worth it I think. plenty of torque and speed for most 1/10 apps. nicest servo I have ever owned and at the top of my budget for servos, but glad I pulled the trigger. Star performer.

Ordered a trackstar ts-d99x a while back and still waiting to get my hands on it(slow boat from china). curious to see how it stacks up. good back up for the pit box if nothing else..

Just got it last week. Seems nice for out of the box. Haven't had a chance to bench test it compared some other servos I have. Hopefully be able to do that soon.
