Time for a New Speed Control, What to Get?

Hey Everyone,

I am just getting back into the hobby after a 10 year break. Going to be running 2wd Mod and I need to get a speed control. Thinking about either a Tekin RSX or a Maclan MMAX PRO COMPETITION 160A ESC. What is everyone's thought, and I am open to other suggestions. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Bump :-)

I have personally loved my HW speedos... XR10 Pro and XR10 Specs, all have treated me very well. Don't really hear any complains about the Maclan, but it's relatively large.

The Maclan MMax Pro is super smooth and very adjustable. You wouldn't be disappointed with it.

+1 on the Maclan gear. I am at two MMax Pros, 1 MRR motor, two Team Edition motors and soon to be a third Team motor and 3rd MMax Pro and I have been happy every step of the way lol Wiring layout is super clean, Fan is only needed on Mod applications, potential tuning options are fantastic though not all fully available yet, and their support here on RCtech has proven to be great. A thousand times over I would buy the MMax instead of the HW.

Those are some sweet speedos. I like. Since you have been gone the Chinese have just about fully captured the market( I think) There are now bunches of low cost speedos that can do the job good and reliably. I recently got castle creation mamba x MAMBA X, 25.2V WP ESC, 8A PEAK BEC, DATALOGGING. It's pretty sweet. I also got 2 of these tsky 120. One is in an 1/8 with 3s. Crazy right? TSKY 120A Sensored Brushless ESC Electronic Speed Controller for RC Car Model-$20.9 and Online Shopping | GearBest.com Mobile. I also just ordered a Hw sct pro to try. https://www.amainhobbies.com/hobbywi...020262/p279090 Good luck. Let us know what you decide. Tell us about the other cool bits your looking at. Cheers

Can't go wrong with HW IMO

maclan mmax pro is way better than tekin rsx IMO

hobbywings are good also but havent use very many

The Tekin & Maclan are the same price on Amain, but the Maclan comes with the program card. Maclan for the win :)

Thanks for the advice guys, I am leaning towards the Maclan for sure now.

Can't go wrong with Maclan or HW. I run HW but I have been thinking about trying a Maclan combo. They get great reviews.

I sold 3 RSX's and 2 HW speedos and replaced them with Maclan after test driving the Maclan of that answers your question. No brainer

I recently jumped back into electric and went hobbywing. The parts seem nice. They are compact and work pretty well. I bought several esc units and one failed on the second run. The others continue without issue. Almost lost all faith in hw initially.

Hobbywing North America has crap customer service and they will even act like assholes on the phone should you have a tech question. The saving grace here is that there is a Hobbywing fellow who's associated with the factory in China and he's always on here and very nice, and helpful for tech support. He's picked up all the slack for the US distributor imo.

Best of luck to you and welcome back!

Which hw units you swap for?

Randy_Pike 07-17-2017 03:08 PM

The RSX doesn't require any programming box. You can adjust 95% of the settings without anything but your finger.

However if you wish to get more in depth and have finer adjustments, you can pick up the Hotwire 3.0 and use the free Hotwire app on your iPhone or Android mobile device.

If you're into competition stock racing the data logging features and HV BEC are tough to walk away from in most cases.
