SMC ESC and Battery

I have been considering what ESC/motor system to get for my new SC5M. I almost pulled the trigger with the Reedy Blackbox 510R ESC with a Reedy motor, but then I happened to discover that SMC has ESCs as well. I have been looking at the RF 170 with motor and program box and it only goes for $150. Whereas the Reedy system would cost around $300.

I am wondering if you all have input with respect to both systems. Getting back into the hobby I determined that I would just get the best stuff, but then the fact that SMC is half the cost I cannot argue with that. However, I have learned from other purchases (not necessarily within the hobby) that you get what you pay for. But then I have also learned that you can sometimes find good deals. And that is what leads me to ask the question, is the SMC system worth the investment? Would I be more pleased with the Reedy system?

My same questions I also pose with respect to the batteries of Reedy and SMC. I want quality and safety. Does SMC skimp in those aspect with regards to their batteries?

The SMC stuff is high quality. Batteries are generally sourced from a small number of manufacturers, regardless of brand.

Is the SMC system worth the investment? You could ask the same about the Reedy stuff as well.

I've run SMC batteries for yrs. and I know a number of guys who run their ESC's and nothing to complain about on either. As far as Reedy, you're paying for the name and their advertising/race promotions etc. (jmo)

I personally am a new believer in the SMC ESCs. I bought their rf170 which is overkill for what I needed but I figured I couldn't really beat the price.

I'm glad I went through with it. Not only is the initial setup a breeze, but making changes with the program box is actually a pleasant experience. I haven't exactly been able to stress it very much considering it's being used in a 17.5 buggy. But so far I love the power you get at such a low cost.

Not to mention the ESC itself looks fantastic with it's black wires and black receiver cable. Keeps everything looking super clean.

And my opinion in the Reedy gear is that yes it's great quality. But that price tag just scares me away. Personally if you were gonna spend that much on an ESC I would go for the Maclan Mmax Pro.
